PERTH AMBOY — The Friends for Preservation of Middlesex County Jewish Cemeteries led a tour of two area burial grounds yesterday, discussing their history and helping relatives locate graves.
Mona Shangold, president of the nonprofit organization, also took the opportunity to show off the landscaping done at Hebrew Fraternity Cemetery in Hopelawn and Congregational Shaarey Tefiloh Cemetery on Florida Grove Road in Perth Amboy. The organization had raised funds to hire a landscaper for the cemeteries, where foliage had grown over some of the graves.

Some of the discussion focused on Congregation Shaarey Tefiloh Cemetery and the adjacent Temple Beth Mordecai Cemetery, both of which were recently vandalized. Some 20 headstones at Mordecai and another 15 at Shaarey Tefiloh were knocked over.

Friends for Preservation of Middlesex County Jewish Cemeteries routinely holds tours of the cemeteries. The next one is scheduled for Oct. 29.
