Virtual Cemetery Tour
Welcome. This virtual tour is for EVERYONE, including YOU, regardless whether you lived in Perth Amboy or not. If you lived in Perth Amboy and attended Congregation Shaarey Tefiloh or another synagogue, you will enjoy this opportunity to walk back in time to the glorious days of your youth. If you grew up in a surrounding community or anywhere else in the world, you will welcome this chance to see the graves of some of your ancestors, other relatives, and friends and the religious and community leaders of the Perth Amboy Jewish community of the 20th century.
Remember the unforgettable voice of Cantor Hirsch Chazin singing to overflowing crowds at Congregation Shaarey Tefiloh. Remember Rose Brody, who taught many of us to write English at Perth Amboy Grammar School, and Bessie Gavronsky, who taught many of us to read Hebrew at the Perth Amboy Hebrew School. Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, who was one of the first rabbis of Congregation Shaarey Tefiloh, was a descendant of a brother of the Vilna Gaon. You will surely smile as you recall Harold (Hecky) Plain, who taught many of us to swim and dive at the YMHA pool.
Indulge yourself in memories from your youth. Observe the beauty and dignity of these hallowed grounds. Notice also the many areas in need of significant restoration, including overgrown vegetation and fallen and broken gravestones. (Click here to begin your virtual tour.)
